How to Relieve Hand Aches

Our hands are one of the most important body parts in our body. We use it for almost everything. From giving a hug to our loved ones to cooking, brushing our teeth, playing music, and so forth. When our hands and fingers hurt, that pain can really impact our daily life and may get worse as we age. So what are some ways to help relieve the aches?

Home Remedies

There are some over-the-counter (OTC) drugs that may help relieve joint swelling and inflammation, however it won't prevent joint damage or reverse it. You can try and see whether hot or cold compress can help ease the pain. It may take some trial and error to see what works for you. A heat compress may be helpful to increase blood flow to the area and when joints are stiff whereas a cold compress may be helpful in reducing the pain and swelling.

If your fingers are hurting such as your thumb, you may want to modify some of the objects you commonly use with you hand like your pen or toothbrush. You can wrap soft tape around the area you grip so that it's bigger so that it does not hurt as much when you grip.

Exercises

To help counter the pain and stiffness you feel in your hands, there are some hand exercise you can try to help ease the symptoms. You can also consult with your primary doctor what exercise is best for you.

1. Keep your wrist and fingers straight while making a tabletop with your fingers. Bend at the knuckles briefly and then straighten.

2. Scrunch your hand into a fist and then straighten your fingers.

3. Tap each fingertip to your thumb one at a time.

4. Rest your hand on a flat surface and then spread your fingers wide apart. Then bring them back together.

5. Place your hand on a flat surface, then lift and lower each finger one at a time.

You can try doing these exercises at least twice a day and repeat each exercise 10 times.

Supplements

Many people also like to turn to supplements to help with the joint pain and aches. One popular go-to supplement is Turmeric Curcumin. This golden herb has been used for centuries for its healing and restorative properties. Turmeric may help support healthy inflammatory response to help alleviate body pain and support joint health. One of our favorites is FarmHaven's Turmeric Curcumin as it is made in the USA in an NSF-certified cGMP facility and include BioPerine, a black pepper extract that can greatly help enhance the absorption of curcumin.

Consult Your Doctor

If the pain and stiffness you experience persist, it may be wise to see an orthopedic hand doctor. Depending on the pain and severity, your doctor may prescribe different remedies to help relieve your joint pain and stiffness.
