GMOs: The Risks & Why You Should Avoid Them

So you may have started hearing the acronym GMO but have no clue what it exactly is. So what exactly is it? GMOs, genetically modified organisms, are crops that have been (as the name suggests) been genetically engineered to withstand the direct application of herbicide or insecticide. In general, it could potentially be any living organism that has been alternated for various reasons; however, the ones you often hear about tend to refer to commercial crops.

 

Why Genetically Modify Crops?

There are several reasons. One of the main reasons is to help withstand natural environmental threats such as drought and frost, as well as pests to prevent crops from dying. These modifications are made to help increase the yield, enhance a certain nutrient aspect of the crop, increase its' growth rate and/or shelf life. This technique was introduced commercially around the mid-1990s as GMO crops became increasingly popular for its rapid growth and pest-resistance. However, it wasn't until recently that more consumers are aware of the increasing growth of GMOs. Unfortunately, there has been a lack of transparency surrounding products that use GMO foods.

 

What Are the Risks?

Although many mainstream science and media claim that GMO foods have no adverse health effects over the period of their study, there is still a huge lack of long-term scientific study of the effects of GMO on humans. Since there is limited testing done, there is still some uncertainty whether this could affect health over long periods of consumption. 

 

Potential Negative Health Impacts

With the limited available research out there, there are a few reasons why it is highly recommended to avoid products containing GMO:

1. Insecticide

Bt, an insecticide toxin, is a naturally occurring bacteria that's been approved for use as an insecticidal spray for organic crops for decades. Crops that have been genetically engineered to produce Bt contain it in every cell and kills insects by making their stomachs burst. This toxin has been linked to damage of the intestinal wall, which can cause digestive issues such as allergies and autoimmune responses.


2. Herbicide

Genetically modified foods have been found to contain higher herbicide residues due to the increase in herbicide spraying. These herbicides have been linked to hormone disruption, birth defects, sterility, and cancer.


3. Learn From History

One of the world's largest producer of genetically engineered seed and herbicides, Monsanto, assures the public that GMO crops are safe to eat. However, in the past they have also assured the public that DDT and PCBs were safe - both of which were proven not to be after its widespread health and environmental damage.

 

 

How You Can Avoid GMO

  • Unfortunately, it is estimated that about 70% of foods in the US grocery stores contain GM ingredients if they are not labeled. However, here are some tips for how you cn avoid GMO:
  • Avoid processed food (80% of processed food contains GMO)
  • Buy Organic (organic certification does not allow for GM ingredients)
