7 Care Tips to Maintain Healthy Hair

Have you ever walked by someone and noticed how beautiful, shiny, and healthy their hair looked? And then you looked at your own hair only to notice a stark difference - dry, untamed, dull, and with split ends? Don't fret! Here are seven care tips you can try to get healthier looking hair.

1. Diet

Your diet is one of the most important steps in achieving healthy hair. The two main nutrients hair needs are both iron and protein. Although hair cells are the fastest growing cells in our body, they are also the first parts to get affected when your diet is not up to par or you are lacking certain nutrients. The reason for this is because you don't really need hair for survival so the body uses what nutrients it can get from your diet for other more important functions of the body.

So, try to incorporate more foods that are high in iron such as leafy vegetables, fish, beans, and cereals into your daily diet. It is recommended that the average adults consume at least 12 mg of iron a day. Protein is also essential in keeping your hair strong, so try including foods such as cheese, milk, and yogurt in your diet as well.

2. Supplements

Sometime despite a healthy diet, our body is unable to absorb all the nutrients we need. That's why on top of eating the right foods for healthy hair - high in protein & iron - many people opt to add supplements into their diet. You can try FarmHaven Women's Multivitamins, which contain Biotin that helps your body metabolize fats and proteins for healthy hair & nails.

3. Trim Often

It is highly recommended to trim your hair every few weeks to get rid of those browning, split ends. Every 7-8 weeks you can try cutting off about a quarter of an inch of your hair. In this way you can help prevent split ends from growing out again.

4. Avoid Washing Hair Daily

For those that like to wash their hair every day, it may be time to stop the habit. Washing your hair every day can dry out and damage your hair. When you do wash your hair, make sure to apply conditioner on the ends of your hair. The type of shampoo and conditioner you use is also important. Try to sticking to the same brand of shampoo and conditioner and buy those that are sulfate-free. According to some researchers, although sulfate creates than lathering effect that cleans your scalp, it could also be stripping your hair of essential oils.

5. Deep Conditioning

Aside from using conditioner after you wash your hair you can also periodically schedule deep conditioning. Once in a while after you've washed and towel dried your hair, take some conditioner and apply it to the root of your hair. Then, use a comb or your hands to run the conditioner thoroughly through your hair. Put your hair up and leave the conditioner in for about 10 minutes to an hour and then rinse out. Incorporating this step into your hair care routine can help you achieve silkier, smoother looking hair!

6. Hair Masks

Similar to deep conditioning you can also purchase hair masks to condition your hair or you can opt to make your own. In fact, most of the ingredients needed for hair masks can be easily bought or found right in your kitchen. Here's one recipe we like:

  • Mash some avocado & add a few drops of peppermint oil and mix. Then apply the mask onto your hair and leave on for about 15-20 minutes before washing it off.

7. Hair Oils

Hair oils gives your hair certain minerals, vitamins, and essential fatty acids that a conditioner can't give. Oils not only strengthen your hair, but also improve your overall hair health. One of the top hair oil recommendations is coconut oil as it can protect the hair from sun damage, dandruff, and potentially accelerate hair growth. Here are two hair oil recipes that we like:

  • Combine 1/2 cup of coconut oil and 3-5 drops of lemongrass essential oil in a glass or plastic bowl that has a lid. Shake to mix ingredients. Apply just a tablespoon to damp or dry hair as needed.

  • Combine 1/2 cup carrier oil (coconut, sweet almond, or jojoba) with 10 drops of peppermint essential oil & 5 drops tea tree essential oil in a container with a lid and shake to mix. You can use a dropper or spray container to apply oil onto damp or dry hair about 2-3 times a week.
